PhD positions
We are always glad to hear from prospective PhD students. We value curiosity, creativity, and a collaborative spirit as much as past experience.
What we look for
- Bachelor's or master's in Engineering, Computer Science, or Applied Physics.
- Strong fundamentals in solid mechanics, with creativity and a passion for research.
- Programming proficiency (Python), and experience with FEM/FEA (Abaqus, ANSYS, COMSOL), CAD/AM, and/or robotics.
- Clear, proactive communication, and the ability to work both independently and in a team.
- Prior research experience and/or publications are a plus but not required.
What we offer
- Immersive training in experimental mechanics, advanced manufacturing, and architected metamaterials, spanning experiment, computation, and theory.
- Access to world-class facilities, and a collaborative network across the College.
- Opportunities for conference travel, impactful publications, and cross-disciplinary projects.
How to apply
There are two routes in. Each year the Department of Aeronautics runs a competitive round of fully funded PhD Studentships, covering fees and a tax-free stipend, with applications typically opening in the autumn and closing in early January. Outside that round, you can apply at any time through Imperial's online application system, naming your proposed supervisor and any funding you are seeking.
Either way, email Dr. Chen first with your CV and a short note on why AIM Lab is a good fit for you.
