About us

The Architected Intelligent Matter (AIM) Laboratory explores intelligent matter at the intersection of mechanics, materials, and geometry. We design materials and structures whose behaviour - how they deploy, deform, respond, and remember - is written into their architecture. Our research vision describes the three pillars behind this work; our projects and publications show where it leads.

We are driven by curiosity, a passion for science, and a belief that doing research is rewarding and enjoyable. We treat one another with respect and honesty: we give direct feedback, we credit each other's contributions, and we have open, courageous conversations. We are committed to building a group that is diverse and inclusive, where people of every background, perspective, and experience feel they belong and can do their best work. We care about each other's wellbeing and growth, and we believe a supportive, welcoming environment is critical to doing excellent science.

The group began at the University of Houston and is now based in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London, on the South Kensington campus. Alongside the science, the studio side of the lab explores the same ideas through the practice of art.
